The Emergency Room

Well, I had the joy of spending last night in the Emergency Room. Sometime between 10 and 10:30pm I started having severe abdominal pain. I tried going to the bathroom, that didn’t help. I tried taking GasX and that didn’t help. The pain just kept getting worse. Finally around 11:30 or so I decided I couldn’t take it anymore and headed to the ER. When they asked me to rate the pain on a scale of 1 to 10, I gave it an 8. I had to wait for a room and while I was waiting I was praying that it would stop. When I finally saw the doctor, he was concerned with my appendix. So they put in an IV and drew some blood. Then, what seemed like an eternity later, they pushed in some saline, a couple of narcotics for the pain and an anti-nausea drug. I wasn’t nauseous, but they made me drink a contrast agent that they needed to stay down and it can cause nausea. They narcotics worked fast and I had to move from the bent over position to laying down or I would have fallen over as things started to spin. I had to wait an hour after drinking the contrast agent before they sent me off for a CT. The CT showed that my appendix appears fine. My white cell count was high but that could be related to the flu that I had a week or so ago. So they think it might have been a virus. They told me that all the stuff they gave me would cause diarrhea and if it was a virus that should flush it out. I was discharged and arrived home a little after 3am. I feel fine now (well, except for the diarrhea anyway), but it was a rough night. I can’t remember ever going to the ER. While they did a decent job (and fairly quick for an ER even though it seemed slow at the time), I hope I never have to go again!!
Now, I'm off to the dentist for my cleaning.
